Alesana is the latest band to take the metalcore/screamo scenes by storm simultaneously. For those not familiar with the genre, it's characterized by the alternation between heavy, screaming metal riffs and melodic singing combined with slow riffs. This switching back and forth creates an attention-grabbing effect that is angry, sad, and beautiful at the same time. Alesana's music is slowly becoming an evolution of hardcore that's popular with both old and new metal heads, as the band is drawing both to tour dates in 2011. Alesana is also well known for their numerous music videos, insanely energetic concert dates, and a work ethic that will make them one of the great bands of the decade.
Alesana was formed in Raleigh, NC in 2004. Since that time, the band has had quite a few changes in their line-up but the music and energy has remained the same. Their first LP, On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax, was released in 2004; the record received mixed reviews, but Alesana was slowly making a name for themselves in the punk/hardcore scene with the help of frenzied concert dates. In 2007, Alesana was welcomed into the loving arms of the Warped Tour, playing on every tour date. The band's follow-up album was Where Myths Fade to Legends, which was unfortunately leaked on the internet before its release, dampening record sales.
After the album was released, the Alesana immediately went back on tour, playing plenty of concert dates with artists that would help fix their place as a heavy-hitting band. In 2009, they performed a tour date at the Australian SoundWave Festival where they played with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and many others. They also joined Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Fear Before on the World of Tourcraft concert tour.
However, their latest album, The Emptiness, has by far become their most popular and well received album. The album was anticipated by fans and Alesana kept them informed on the album's progress through Twitter. After releasing the album, the band immediately headlined the Vs. tour with The Bled and Enter Shikari. Alesana had planned a On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax tour - where they would play their first LP in its entirety, but it was cancelled when they signed with Epitaph records in early November of 2010.
The label change hasn't set them back, though, as they are back with new 2011 tour dates. Alesana will joining Escape the Fate on headlining tour dates in 2011, along with Motionless in White, Get Scared, and Drive A. While the Australian and New Zealand selection of concert dates is already underway, Alesana will be joining Escape the Fate for their German concert dates beginning June 3. They will also be along for tour dates in Austria, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia in early June and September, but that will be fans' last chance to catch these titans of hardcore on tour dates in 2011.
