During the group's early years in the 90s, many record executives scoffed at the idea that an all female country group could sell platinum records or sell-out tour dates. Those record executives are still kicking themselves to this day for not signing the Dixie Chicks when they had the chance. While country music (and its fans in particular) haven't always been kind to the Dixie Chicks, the country trio was instrumental in the mainstream country resurgence in the late 90s and 2000s. While the Dixie Chicks' record and tour date sales have made them one of the highest selling female bands in the US, the Dixie Chicks went on hiatus in 2008, leaving their true fans wanting for new music and a concert schedule in 2011.

The Dixie Chicks originally consisted of sisters Martie and Emily Erwin, Laura Lynch, and Robin Lynn Macy. After two albums and numerous tour dates, success continued to elude the group and Robin Lynn Macy left the group. Session steel guitarist Lloyd Maines recommended that his daughter, Natalie, replace Macy as a vocalist. Laura Lynch left the band shortly before being signed to Sony, and thus the current incarnation of the Dixie Chicks was born. The Dixie Chicks scored a hit right off the bat with their 1998 album, Wide Open Spaces, which won two Grammys and eventually went diamond. The Dixie Chicks continued their meteoric rise to fame with Fly in 1999, which also won two Grammys and eventually went diamond. This was the first Dixie Chicks album to spark controversy with conservative country audiences; in particular "Sin Wagon"'s reference to "mattress dancing." Regardless, Fly earned the Dixie Chicks their first headlining tour dates, as well as tour dates on Lilith Fair.

The Dixie Chicks experienced similar success with their 2002 album, Home, which garnered more headlining concert schedules, as well as televised tour dates. The trio experienced a lull in record sales after their controversial comments concerning President Bush; a criticism deemed controversial only in country music. The Dixie Chicks unrepentingly retaliated with Taking the Long Way in 2006, which won five Grammys and went double platinum, despite being boycotted in certain Southern regions. While attendance at tour dates on Dixie Chicks' following concert schedule, many influential musicians and media moguls rallied behind the band and criticized country music fans and corporate America for blacklisting the girls. Not influenced by the controversy, the Dixie Chicks went on hiatus in 2008 to spend time with their budding families.

Since that time, Martie Maguire and Emily Robinson have begun a side project together called Court Yard Hounds, and the Dixie Chicks were found in 2010 supporting The Eagles on tour dates. Fans are waiting anxiously for the announcement of a new album or a concert schedule in 2011, but it looks like there's no hope on the horizon. Keep checking Eventful for any updates on when the Dixie Chicks will return to their world renowned music.
