The girls met each other in elementary school in Decatur, Georgia. They formed the Indigo Girls while at Emory University in the mid '80s and began performing at the local college scene. They released a self-titled EP in 1987 before cutting their debut LP, Strange Fire, later that year. Indigo Girls tour dates were scheduled throughout Georgia in the hopes that they could secure a recording contract off the hype that their live performances generated. As luck and talent would have it, they were signed to Epic Records in 1988 following a string of successful women folk acts like Tracy Chapman. Their major label debut, Indigo Girls, was released in 1988 and hit #22 on the Billboard 200. The album featured the hit "Closer to Fine", and earned the duo a Grammy Award in 1990 for Best Contemporary Folk Album and a Platinum plaque. The Indigo Girls toured and performed at hundreds of concerts, highlighting their passion for live performance.
After releasing several more albums in the '90s, the Indigo Girls scored their first top ten album with Swamp Ofelia in 1994. They followed this up with their highest charting album to-date, Shaming of the Sun, which peaked at #7 in 1997. That year, the Indigo Girls toured to promote the disc and headlined the first annual Lillith Fair Tour, which featured female musicians. During the early part of the 2000s, the girls released two more well-received albums before parting ways with Epic Records. They then moved over to Hollywood Records, released one album, Despite Our Differences, and were subsequently dropped from the label during the Indigo Girls' tour in 2007.
The Indigo Girls then decided to go independent and began releasing their unique politically charged folk music their own way. They started an independent label, IG Recordings, and released Poseidon and the Bitter Bug in 2009. The Indigo Girls are also very politically active in the environmentalist movement and have Greenpeace representatives along tour stops at Indigo Girls concerts. The Indigo Girls developed the Honor The Earth Tour to raise awareness on college campuses. The duo closed out the decade with another album, Holly Happy Days, and have been promoting the disc on the road ever since its release in 2010.
