The Maryland native attended Brown University and was in a band with Duncan Sheik before each went their separate solo ways. Loeb released her debut, Purple Tape, in 1992 and sold the cassette at concert performances. It was her chance meeting with actor Ethan Hawke that Loeb garnered the opportunity to expand her music to a national audience. Hawke happened to live across the street from Loeb who introduced her to Ben Stiller who was directing the film, Reality Bites. Stiller decided to use Loeb's single, "Stay (I Missed You)" on the ending credits and the single became an overnight hit. Released in 1994, the single reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered Loeb the distinction as the only artist without a recording contract to hit #1. In 1995, Loeb released Tails which featured "Stay" and "How Do You Sleep". The album was certified Gold and Loeb was nominated for a Grammy Award.
In 1997, Loeb released Firecracker, which garnered her another Gold plaque and another Grammy nomination for the track "I Do". Since her heyday as an acoustic pop-star, Loeb has been busy in the studio and on television working on several different projects.
