      Bio

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, better known by her stage name of M.I.A. (Missing in Acton), has become one of the world's premier artists through groundbreaking albums and fantastic tour dates. While its difficult to put her music into one genre, her unique brand of electronic music with world, hip-hop, and dance styles has make her hard to imitate. While M.I.A. has no more tour dates for 2011, there are rumors that she's working diligently on a new album.

Maya experienced a turbulent childhood, as her father was a revolutionary that worked to establish an independent Tamil state in Northern Sri Lanka. As an enemy of the Sri Lankan government, M.I.A. rarely saw her father and witnessed the horrors of the Sri Lankan Civil War. She eventually settled in London and worked as an artist for years, including creating cover art for Elastica. Frontwoman Justine Frischmann suggested she make music, and M.I.A. soon released two underground hit singles, "Galang" and "Sunshowers." News of her popular tour dates quickly spread and, in 2005, released her debut album, Arular (her father's alias as a revolutionary). The album featured songs concerning war and both her father's and her own experiences with Tamil independence, and was critically acclaimed by critics. M.I.A.'s 2007, gained even more recognition and praise, supported by the hit single "Paper Planes."

The success of her 2010 album, Maya, has ensured M.I.A.'s place as one of the top electronic musicians in the world. It featured the single "Born Free", which was accompanied by a controversial and chill music video depicting ginger genocide. Fans disappointed at the lack of tour dates in 2011 can take comfort in the fact that, considering her previous success, the album she's working on will be worth the wait.
