It's a '60s Garage Rock Revival with THE SLOTHS (yes, the originals).
THE SLOTHS was one of the many teenage bands in the ‘60s playing the infamous Sunset Strip circuit. Their line-up was comprised of 5 teenage boys; students at Beverly Hills High and drop-outs. Rehearsing in their families garages, they practiced songs by British bands that inspired them: the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds and the Who, as well as American Rhythm & Blues musicians, such as: Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters. The band quickly garnered a staunch following.
THE SLOTHS recorded two original songs for Impression Records: MAKIN’ LOVE and YOU MEAN EVERYTHING TO ME, but were told they were too loud and brash for standard radio airwaves. Shopping the records themselves to local radio stations earned them some decent airplay and they began procuring opening gigs for such bands as: THE DOORS, IRON BUTTERFLY, PINK FLOYD and THE ANIMALS.
After several changes of lead singers, the band hooked up with singer, TOMMY McLOUGHLIN, and taking on a new moniker, began performing as the MAY WINES. Mentor, FRANK ZAPPA, occasionally sat in gigs on guitar. In 1968, with parental demands, the chaos of adolescence and pending adulthood, they disbanded to pursue college and life.
In 2011, THE SLOTHS’ original lead guitarist, now lawyer, Jeff Briskin, hired a detective to locate his former band-mates. Two of the original members have unfortunately passed away, but augmented by a couple of able ‘young’ musicians, The SLOTHS are now Revived and Revitalized over 40 years later. A contemporary cult following has emerged, possibly generated by the reissue of MAKIN’ LOVE on the Crypt Records compilation Back From Grave (V2) and a cover recorded by Chicago’s Garage Punk band, THE GORIES
$6,500? Recently, THE SLOTHS' original vinyl 45’s, with the photo sleeves they had made on a high school mimeograph machine, sold for over $6.500 each!
THE SLOTHS' current band line up consists of: Tommy McLoughlin (Lead Vocals), Jeff Briskin (Guitar), Mike Rummans (Bass & Guitar), Dave Provost (Guitar) and Ray Herron (Drums). They have elevated themselves back into public cognizance, and are performing a relentless tide of defiant, soul-shattering Garage Rock at clubs Nationwide.
