      Bio

“Pirate music?! Cool, but what does that mean? Mexicali Gypsy Ska Rock?? COOL!!” This reaction is quite common for San Francisco-based pioneers Diego’s Umbrella. So, imagine dancing uncontrollably in a border town cantina while singing along to an infectious Tarantino-like soundtrack being belted out by mariachi gypsies that’s reminiscent of Gogol Bordello, Devotchka, Flogging Molly, Sublime, Buena Vista Social Club and The Clash. Regardless how you attempt to explain it, this group has emerged as one of the most innovative and ear-catching voices from the Bay Area .

The brainchild of Vaughn Lindstrom and Tyson Maulhardt, this musical ensemble recorded their first album in 2001, and has now morphed into a heavy hitting live band with the addition of Kevin Blair, Jason Kleinberg, Jake Wood and Ben Leone. The release of Viva la Juerga in late 2007 possesses a high energy feel, incorporating more of a rock, ska, klezmer sound into the already tasteful eclectic mix. In early 2008 it ranked #129 on the CMJ top 200 chart. They are happy to have introduced their most recent full-length studio album Double Panther, in October 2009.

Beyond radio play, several DU songs were featured in the X-Dance-award-winning documentary Sofia, the Quiksilver/Roxy surf DVD Shimmer, as well as CBS’ Elimination Station. Released in early 2009, the Lionsgate comedy “Still Waiting” features 3 songs by Diego’s Umbrella.

Often dressed in elaborate home-made outfits, these urban gringo mariachis have performed well over 800 live shows. Live being the key word; their unforgettable performance is visually and audibly captivating, consistently motivating people to move themselves uncontrollably. In addition to continuous tours of the American west, Diego’s Umbrella recently returned from their third European tour. The band has held a weekly residency at the Park Chalet in San Francisco since July 2005 and continues to play every Tuesday night at the famous bar and restaurant.

"With guitars straight out of a Tarantino movie, the group seamlessly blends mariachi, gypsy, flamenco and ska into one beer-soaked fiesta, with song topics varying from heartache to revolution." -NewsReview.com
