      Who is Die Antwoord?
      (a) South African rap-rave group.
      (b) Viral sensation.
      (c) Concept artists.
      (d) Afrikaans for “The Answer”.
      (e) All of the above.
The correct answer is (e) All of the above. The dirty-fancy style of Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er is unlike anything in the music world today. With DJ Hi-Tek behind their fresh beats, the group burst on to the scene with the viral sensation, Enter the Ninja, in 2010. Die Antwoord combines the modern trashy style that is the Zef counter-culture movement with conceptual, provocative videos. Their music videos have gained them a cult following, featuring everything from rats and gold jewelry to their second hit, "Evil Boy", with Xhosa rapper Wanga protesting the ritual of male self-circumcision. Die Antwoord is currently touring the world and playing shows everywhere from Amsterdam to Los Angeles and promoting their third album, Ten$ion.

These Cape Town, South Africa natives had the idea to form the group in 2008 when ex-members of MaxNormal.TV and The Constructus Corporation, Anri Du Toit (Yo-Landi) and Watkin Tudor Jones (Ninja), decided to form their own rap-rave group with a fancy-dirty style that is Zef. Zef style can be described as modern, futuristic, trashy with discarded cultural elements. Their music and lyrics are stylized similarly. With Ninja’s furious and violent rapping, and Yo-Landi’s hi-pitched rapping and singing, and DJ Hi-Tek’s catchy beats, the group was unlike anyone else when they dropped their first single, “Enter the Ninja”, off their second album 5. With South African cinematographer Rob Malpage, Die Antwoord shot the video for “Enter the Ninja”, featuring Cape Town artist, Leon Botha, and the rest was history. Millions of views later, they released a second and even more raw video for “Evil Boy”, which features Xhosa rapper Evil Boy rapping about the rejection of the Xhosa tradition of self-circumcision.

Their provocative material and ridiculous stage presence quickly gained them a cult following, at home and abroad. Following the success of “Evil Boy”, Die Antwoord signed a deal with Interscope Records, and landed their first international concert appearance at Coachella Music Festival 2010 in front of a crowd of forty thousand. However, Interscope and Die Antwoord parted ways in 2010 over a dispute over their upcoming album and its lead single, “Fok Julle Naaiers”, and the group went on to create their own label, Zef Recordz. In 2012 they released their third album, Ten$Ion,, through their own label, which debuted at #20 on the Billboard Dance/Electro Albums chart.

Their freaky artistic videos continue to wow audiences and provoke mixed reviews. Their 2012 tour takes them across Europe, with a couple stops in California.
