      GB5 BIO

In the tradition of such notable families as The Winans & Jackson 5 or the extended families of Take 6 and 4Him, come the Gutierrez Brothers, known as GB5 for their Latin Gospel Praise. With vocals that tingle the spine one minute and warm the heart the next, the long-awaited debut release of these siblings vibrates at DNA frequencies known only to a few chosen families. With an affinity for worship and a deep heritage in the church, GB5 brings the weight of their obedient journey and their Hispanic heritage to this debut, and the results are formidable.

As the 21st century came rushing in, so too did GB5 as their uncle, who serves as pastor, asked them to put together a song for a New Year’s Eve service. Who would have known that half a decade later, these brothers would be supporting a recording that has brought together the likes of Jonathan Butler, Justo Almario, Luis Conte, and world renowned Tata Vega! The project, Unbreakable Bond, also brought to the table the production talents of legendary Alberto Salas (Santana, Los Lobos, Andrae Crouch), Rex Rideout (Luther Vandross, Angie Stone, Will Downing), Jason White (Kurt Carr, Judith McAllister, Helen Baylor), and seasoned veteran Phil Sillas (Natalie Grant, Plus One, Promise Keepers).

Growing up in the church, these siblings discovered their voices early on and nearly by accident. In the subsequent 7 years, the members of GB5 have created a style showcasing their brotherly love of groove, harmony, R&B, Latin fused-Gospel and, most importantly, their heartfelt desire to worship a living God.

Hailing from San Jose, California, GB5 was raised to honor God in everything they did. Louie, Jamie, Isaac, Mark and Aaron sensed from a young age that God was melding their hearts together around something more than their love of music. Artistic genes were passed down from their grandfather’s ability to play a variety of instruments and their mother’s unrestrained singing at the top of her voice in their home. This legacy made music one of the main languages of the home and heart.

"We also had the privilege to grow up in church under some awesome worship leaders who taught us how to worship in ‘Spirit and in truth’ and our parents have always encouraged us to stick together and follow our dreams," remembers Jamie.

It doesn’t take many conversations with these guys to discover their appreciation of influences from a number of greats such as BeBe and CeCe Winans, Jonathan Butler and Whitney Houston. If one were to secretly enter their iPods, they might hear everything from Kirk Franklin to Ella Fitzgerald. The brothers take their love of Gospel and fuse it into an amalgam of Latin-soul, jazz and a handful of other idioms, all the while declaring their unrestrained love of the Savior. Their blend is so seamless it is often a challenge to discover which brother is being featured in each song.

It is their Latin and international flavors, however, that the West Coast and large cities love as the group brings together styling’s as varied as the countries from which the influences are found—places such as Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil and the Caribbean. You quickly hear moments of salsa, meringue and even Afro Cuban grooves that make this project unique.

Worshipers have an instant kinship with the family as their concerts and recordings capture their deeply expressive hearts of worship. “It has been such a blessing to see the way God has taken our brotherly talents and formed them into hearts of praise and worship. Joshua 24:15 says, ‘Choose you this day whom you will serve...but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ This has been our commitment from the very beginning," offers Aaron.

GB5’s love of Gospel music is also evident from such influences as the Clark Sisters and Andrae Crouch, who have inspired them over the years. “As our taste for music broadened as we got older, it always came from a ‘soulful’ place," describes Isaac. From funky bravado to tender balladry, the group delivers a project with the power and control of veterans twice their age.

Even as they team up alongside such artists as Donnie McClurkin, Chris Tomlin, Marcos Witt and others, it is clear that the members of GB5 have a call on their lives to create a space for God’s visitation. Unbreakable Bond is an astonishingly seasoned debut that combines vocal brilliance with an undeniable heart for worship from a family whose bond is just that--unbreakable.
