      MORE INFO ABOUT Joanna Newsom

      Bio

While Joanna Newsom prefers to work free of labels or genres, she can be described as one of the key figures in psych folk. As a solo artist, she deftly operates the harp, piano, and harpsichord on tour dates, to produce Appalachian inspired folk music that is unlike anything heard in recent years. Her vocal stylings harken back to turn of the 20th century mountain music that provides a pleasant contrast to her smooth, melodic instrumentation. Newsom's latest album, Have One on Me, marks her continued rise to fame and the evolution of her musical/vocal style. Fans hoping for a full concert schedule this year might be disappointed with the two scheduled tour dates in 2011, but can anticipate the artists return to touring sometime soon.

Joanna Caroline Newsom was born on January 18, 1982, in the historic California town of Nevada City; she is the second cousin twice removed of Lieutenant Governor of California and former mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom. After becoming proficient at the piano around the age of six, Joanna Newsom soon learned the harp, which became her primary instrument from then on. After playing the harp for the majority of high school, Joanna studied composition and creative writing at Mills College in Oakland, CA. She eventually dropped out of college to pursue her music career, which included solo tour dates in small venues. Using a Fisher-Price tape recorder, Newsom recorded two solo EP's: Walnut Whales (2002) and Yarn and Glue (2003).

A copy of one of the EPs made its way to Will Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy), who invited Newsom to perform on tour dates with him. He also passed the demo to execs at his Drag City Record label, who soon signed the young artist and released her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, in 2004. The album was praised by many music magazines and websites, and went on to sell over 200,000 copies in the US. After the album's release, Newsom continued to play tour dates in support of many musicians, which included appearances on a number of talk shows. In 2006, she released her second album, Ys, which featured prominent use of polyrhythms and musical arrangement by famed composer Van Dyke Parks. The album soon became critically acclaimed and shot to #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, despite the album being leaked two months before its release.

After recovering from vocal cord nodules and developing a new singing voice in 2009, Joanna Newsom released her most acclaimed album to date, Have One on Me. The record was a hit upon its release, with praise coming from nearly every critic on the planet. While there has been no announcement concerning new music, fans in Western Europe can expect to be delighted by a handful of tour dates in 2011. Joanna Newsom's concert schedule will include a tour date in Dublin on July 24, an appearance at the Blue Balls Fest in Lucerne, Switzerland, and the final tour date for 2011 at the End Of The Road Festival in Dorset on September 4. Fans disappointed in the sparse concert schedule can take solace in the fact the Joanna Newsom is being musically productive in her time off.
