      Bio

Born in Middlesbrough, James Arthur began writing and performing his own music at the age of 15. As a teen, he played in numerous unsigned bands, including Cue the Drama, Save Arcade, and The James Arthur Project. In 2011, Arthur auditioned for the first season of The Voice UK, but didn't make it on to the show. However, he auditioned for The X Factor the very next year, eventually winning the competition's ninth season.

Immediately after winning the competition, Arthur's winner's song, "Impossible", became the fastest selling winner's single yet, topping the UK Singles Chart. His self-titled debut album was released in late 2013, and shot to the top of the UK Albums Chart. The album featured his winner's single, as well as the hit single "You're Nobody 'till Somebody Loves You".

Following backlash over racially charged and homophobic lyrics, Arthur took a break from performing and recording. In 2016, he released his sophomore album, Back from the Edge, which featured the chart-topping single, "Say You Won't Let Go". The song stayed at No. 1 for three consecutive weeks, and made Arthur the first male X-Factor winner to have two UK No. 1 singles. The track also became his first to chart in the US, reaching #39 on the Billboard 200.
