      MORE INFO ABOUT Tory Lanez

      Bio

Originally from Toronto, Tory Lanez (born Daystar Peterson) moved around Canada and the US due to an unstable family life. After being abandoned by his grandmother at the age of 15, Lanez raised himself on the streets of Jamaica, Queens. He dropped out of school the next year, eventually performing concerts on the street with his naturally gifted vocal talents.

Lanez released his debut mixtape at the age of 17, while living in South Florida. One of his amateur, self-directed music videos caught the eye of Sean Kingston, who gave Lanez his first professional live performance on Justin Bieber’s tour. Lanez was briefly signed to Kingston’s Time is Money Entertainment label, but left to be an independent artist.

Lane rose to prominence in 2014 with his Fargo Fridays series for HotNewHipHop. While the young artist was growing his own name brand, he was also secretly writing songs for the likes of Akon, Meek Mill, and T.I. It wasn’t until he released the Lost Cause mixtape that Lanez reached the kind of recognition he had been seeking. A year later, Lanez released his first EP, Cruel Intentions, and shortly after signed with Interscope Records.

Having signed with a major label, Lanez was able to work on his debut studio album. Before the album had even been completed, the lead single, “Say It”, became a smash hit, reaching #23 on the Billboard Top 100. I Told You was released a few months later, in August of 2016, already massively supported by the single’s popularity and the promise of a national tour.
